Neurodiversity

At SASH, we are dedicated to supporting neurodivergent individuals by fostering inclusivity and empowering them to make informed decisions about their sexual health and wellbeing.

How can SASH support you?

At SASH, we embrace neurodiversity by working with individuals to create a more inclusive and supportive environment. Our goal is to help you feel confident and secure in managing your sexual health and wellbeing, and making informed choices that reflect your needs as a neurodivergent individual.

What is neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity refers to the natural variations in how people’s brains work and function.

A neurodivergent individual experiences the world differently compared to a ‘neurotypical’ person, who does not have these variations.
A ‘neurotypical' is a person who is not neurodivergent.

Are there different forms of neurodiversity?

There are various conditions that can be classed as neurodivergent, but there is no definitive list. It is ultimately up to the individual to decide if they identify as neurodivergent.

Some conditions that fall under the neurodiversity umbrella include:

  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • ADD
  • Dyscalculia
  • Dyslexia
  • Dyspraxia
  • Cognitive functioning difficulties or executive dysfunction
  • Dysgraphia
  • Misophonia
  • Slow processing speed
  • Stammering
  • Tourette’s syndrome

How does SASH approach neurodiversity?

We want everyone who accesses SASH to gain as much as possible from our services. Being neurodivergent means experiencing the world differently from those who are not, which is why we are committed to adapting our services to best support you.

This might include:

  • Changing our approach when providing support
  • Recognising the unique strengths and challenges faced by each neurodivergent group.
  • Making adjustments to help each neurodivergent individual thrive

Neurodiversity and sexual health

Being neurodivergent can impact sexual health in various ways. It may affect how relationships are understood and navigated, influence sexual communication, alter sensory experiences, and shape intimacy. This doesn’t mean neurodivergent individuals are incapable or need to change—rather, their experiences may differ from typical sexual health experiences.

Additional needs

Everyone, regardless of neurodiversity, has sexual health needs. However, individuals with additional needs as a result of their learning disabilities and or autism often have their sexual health overlooked and seen as 'too challenging to navigate'.

If you are a parent or carer for someone with additional needs, we offer tailored support for them, as well as for you and your family. Learn more on our Parents and Carers page.
