What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a medical condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the uterus. This tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, outer surface of the uterus, and other pelvic organs.
How does endometriosis work?
During the menstrual cycle, the endometrial-like tissue outside the uterus responds to hormonal changes. It thickens, breaks down, and bleeds. However, unlike the endometrium that sheds during menstruation, this blood and tissue have no way to exit the body, leading to inflammation, pain, and the formation of scar tissue.
How common is it?
1 in 10 women and those assigned female of birth of reproductive age in the UK suffer from endometriosis. Worldwide, this translates to 10% of women having the condition - that’s 176 million worldwide.
What are the symptoms?
Endometriosis can cause a variety of symptoms, including:
- Pelvic pain
- Painful periods
- Pain during intercourse
- Infertility
- Digestive issues
The severity of symptoms can vary greatly among individuals, with some experiencing mild discomfort and others facing debilitating pain.
What causes it?
Although the exact cause of endometriosis is not fully understood, factors such as genetics, hormonal imbalances, immune system disorders, and retrograde menstruation (where menstrual blood flows backward into the pelvic cavity) may contribute to its development.
Is there treatment?
Treatment options for endometriosis include pain management medications, hormonal therapies, surgery to remove endometrial implants and scar tissue, and in severe cases, hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). It's essential for individuals experiencing symptoms of endometriosis to seek medical evaluation and treatment from healthcare professionals specializing in the condition.
